Check the publications of the institutes listed below. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens, for example, provides open-access pdfs of many of its volumes on Corinth, the Athenian Agora, and Hesperia Supplements. Although it was published in 1976, the Princeton Encyclopedia of Classical Sites, is a handy source for site bibliographies. Grove Art Online has entries for many major sites with references to past and recent publications. Search BULS for publications. If unavailable, request them via Interlibrary Loan.
Egypt

Greece
- The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) is the oldest and largest U.S. overseas research center. A consortium of nearly 200 affiliated North American colleges and universities, the School provides graduate students and scholars a base for the advanced study of all aspects of Greek culture, from antiquity to the present day.
- Archaeological Society at Athens The Archaeological Society at Athens aims to: a) Uncover, collect, maintain, preserve, restore, repair and investigate ancient monuments in Greece and beyond, including Christian, Byzantine and other monuments belonging to the period up to the Greek Revolution. b) Study the life of ancient people and explore Byzantine and Medieval archeology and art. Overall stimulate the interest in fine arts and the dissemination of knowledge regarding the history of ancient and modern art.
- British School at Athens The British School at Athens provides facilities for those engaged in research into anthropology, archaeology, archaeometry, architecture, art, environment, geography, history, language, literature, religion and topography pertaining to Greek lands in all periods including modern times.
- Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) The Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) is a privately-funded, not-for-profit educational institution, incorporated in Canada by Federal charter, which seeks to promote Canadian research and education in fields relating to Greece’s heritage. From its founding in 1974 until 2006 it was called the Canadian Archaeological Institute at Athens (CAIA).
- French School at Athens The French School at Athens is the first foreign institute established in Greece. Founded in 1846, it is a center of advanced research in humanities whose core mandate is the study of Greece in its Balkan and Mediterranean contexts, from prehistoric time to the present. This mission encompasses the training of a new generation of academics, facilitating early-career researchers’ access to the field and the sources. It supports their integration within a high-level international environment.
- German Archaeological Institute in Athens (DAI) The mission of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) is to conduct and facilitate research worldwide in the archaeological sciences and classical studies. Through its research projects the DAI creates an important foundation for dialogue between cultures, for international scientific collaboration and for the preservation of cultural heritage.
- Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports The Ministry of Culture and Sports is the government department of Greece entrusted with preserving the country's cultural heritage, promoting the arts, and overseeing sport.
Iraq & Iran
- British Institute of Persian Studies (BIPS) The British Institute of Persian Studies (BIPS) is dedicated to promoting and supporting scholarship, research excellence and understanding on all aspects of Iran and the wider Persianate world.
- The British Institute for the Study of Iraq We promote research and education about the history, societies, and cultures of Iraq.
- German Archaeological Institute in Baghdad (DAI) The Baghdad office was founded in 1955 as Baghdad Department. It was integrated in the Orient Department in 1996. Its main mission is to conduct research in archaeological and ancient oriental/philological studies on Mesopotamia, in particular in southern and northeastern Iraq.
Italy
- American Academy in Rome (AAR) MISSION The American Academy in Rome supports innovative artists, writers, and scholars living and working together in a dynamic international community.
- British School at Rome (BSR) For 100 years, world-class researchers and contemporary artists have been nurtured at the British School at Rome. We are the bridge between the intellectual and cultural heart of Rome and Italy, and creative and academic researchers from Britain and the Commonwealth.
- French School at Rome The École française de Rome supports research and training in archaeology, history and other fields of the humanities and social sciences covering all periods from prehistory to the present day. Its geographical areas of focus include Rome and the rest of Italy, the Maghreb and the countries of southeastern Europe that border the Adriatic.
- German Archaeological Institute in Rome (DAI) It is the oldest DAI department with origins as a European research institute. Though the Rome-based institute became a DAI branch in the 19th century, its main research focus to this day is the cultural heritage of Europe, with a special emphasis on the territory of modern Italy as well as neighbouring regions, including North Africa.
The Levant
- American Center of Research (ACOR) The American Center of Research (ACOR) is an international, non-profit academic institution, which advances understanding of Jordan and the region, past and present. We promote and support research across a broad swath of the social, natural and physical sciences, humanities, and the arts.
- Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute We provide one of the most important centers for the scholarly study of archaeology, history and culture in the Eastern Mediterranean. Scholars from these and other academic disciplines and all nationalities come together under our roof to share multidisciplinary approaches and research findings.
- W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research The W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem supports and facilitates research on the history and societies of the Near East from prehistory through the twenty-first century.
Turkey
- American Research Institute in Turkey Since its founding, the mission of ARIT has been to promote North American and Turkish research related to Turkey in all fields of the humanities and the social sciences. ARIT provides support for these aims by maintaining research centers and libraries in Istanbul and Ankara and administering fellowship programs to support advanced research in and about Turkey.
- British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) The British Institute at Ankara supports, enables and encourages research in Turkey and the Black Sea region in a wide range of fields including archaeology, ancient and modern history, heritage management, social sciences and contemporary issues in public policy and political sciences.
- Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations ANAMED, the Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations, housed in the historic Merkez Han on Istanbul’s Istiklal Street, was founded in 2005to develop and facilitate research projects that are dedicated to the history, art, architecture and archaeology of civilizations in Türkiye.
