This guide presents a selection of works of art from ancient Greece and the Roman Empire that inspired or were models for many American monuments and memorials, especially those dedicated during the Neo-Classical period of the 19th century. Articles on Byzantine reuse, reception, and rejection of the earlier art works are referenced. Monuments include statues and portrait sculpture; arches; columns and obelisks; tombs and mausolea; and coins depicting portraits, statues, and architectural monuments. Selected bibliographic references to the art works and to monuments and memorials in general are provided.
