External Sources

This section groups together some very good external sources of images, including museums and galleries, which have made the majority of their collections available under CC licenses.

If an image you wish to use is not open for re-use under the CC license or similar, please come and speak to the library and we will aim to source this for you on your behalf.

Europeana Collections has been operational since 2008. It is an EU-funded digital library which groups together the major heritage collections across the whole of the European Union, so the breadth of material available here is vast.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has released thousands of images under the Creative Commons CC0 license, meaning these are completely free to use in any way you choose. Click into the link below, then into Open Access Art Works.

Some images are free to use and available under the following license: Creative Commons Zero (CC0)  When this is the case you are free to use and store the images, and will show CC0 next to the image itself.
