Copyright Limits

Under the terms of the CLA licence, we can use:

  • 1 whole chapter of a book, or 10% of the whole, whichever is greater
  • 1 article from a journal

We can also purchase second extracts – an additional single chapter or 10% – provided the publisher/rights holder allows this. Please speak to the library if you require additional content from a publication.

Permissions check through the CLA website

The CLA landing page has a very useful feature, whereby you can check the permissions for individual titles, under the terms of our licences. Simply type in the ISBN/ISSN or title etc, then choose Higher Education. Click into the button Permissions to show the options you have for the book or journal.

Exceptions

Exceptions – often referred to as fair dealing – allows the use of copyrighted material for non-commercial purposes without permission, under certain circumstances. Within education, exceptions offer us a great deal of flexibility and are an asset to teaching and learning.

However, this his needs to be treated with all due caution. For example, copying 80% of a book or journal would never be considered “fair”, and would be in breach of UK copyright.

Further guidance and examples:

Naomi Korn Associates has produced an excellent guide to UK Exceptions, which briefly describes each one, and can be seen in the PDF below.

The government’s Intellectual Property Office has produced a very succinct and easy to digest guide to exceptions for education.
