It is vital that all third-party materials used in any work produced on behalf of the university, such as presentations, are taken from legitimate sources. Third-party materials means anything and everything produced by others outside of BU, and which the university does not subscribe to, or form part of its suite of resources.
Use of images found online is perhaps the most popular form of third party material, and the riskiest in terms of copyright implications and potential rights owner's claims against the university.
This guide explains the very popular Creative Commons licences - under which many images and other materials are released - and how you can use and interpret these, and contains links through to a wide variety of official and trust worthy sources of images.
If we choose to ignore copyright law, this leaves BUSA and BU as a whole open to potential fines and reputational damage for copyright infringement.
