Google Book Search
Searches the text of thousands of books but the full-text is only available if it is out of copyright (before 1923) or if the copyright holder has given permission. Limited previews may also be available.

InTechOpen is the world's largest Science, Technology and Medicine Open Access book publisher. With a goal to provide free online access to research since 2004, InTechOpen has published 3,175 books and 47,941 scientific works total by 104,534 international scientists.
Internet Archive: Texts
The Internet Archive and Open Library offers over 10,000,000 fully accessible books and texts. There is also a collection of 300,000 modern eBooks that may be borrowed or downloaded by the print-disabled at OpenLibrary.org.
Library of Congress Digital Collections
Includes American Memory, a collection of original documents related to many aspects of American history. Other collections include historic American newspapers, country handbooks, video and audio oral histories, and legislative documents.
National Academies Press
More than 5,000 books are available to read online for free. There may be a charge for downloading.
National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Bookshelf
Collection of biology and biomedical books that can be searched and, in some cases, browsed and downloaded. This site is linked to PubMed.

Over 50,000 books available for free. Has links to Gutenberg sites in other countries that also provide free online books.
UC Press E-Books Collection, 1984-2004
Contains almost 2,000 books. Approximately 700 are available to the public without cost. Covers a variety of subject areas.
