Faculty ProfileRobert Cummings Neville is a philosopher, theologian, and scholar of religion who retired in 2018 from Boston University. Before his appointment to the deanship of the School of Theology in 1988, Dean Neville was the Director of the Boston University Division of Religious and Theological Studies and chair of the Religion Department. He was Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and has also taught at Yale, Fordham, and SUNY Purchase. An ordained elder in the Missouri East Conference of the United Methodist Church, Dean Neville has pastored in Missouri and New York, and served as Dean of Marsh Chapel and Chaplain of the University at Boston University from 2003 to 2006. Dean Neville is the past president of the American Academy of Religion, the International Society for Chinese Philosophy, and the Metaphysical Society of America. He is currently a member of the Accrediting Commission of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and of the Commission on Theological Education of the United Methodist Church, and he is president of the Association of United Methodist Theological Schools and (for 1998-99) of the Trustees of the Boston Theological Institute. He is a member of the editorial boards of The Journal of the American Academy of Religion, Soundings, and Quarterly Review, as well as the Associate Editor for Behavioral and Neurological Articles, The Encyclopedia of Bioethics.
