Gender, face mask perceptions, and face mask wearing: Are men being dangerous during the COVID-19 pandemic? (ScienceDirect) Recent popular press authors have proposed that men are less likely to wear face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. We investigate this notion in the current article by analyzing three extant datasets.

There are several possible reasons for this difference, including partisanship and gender identity.
Men’s attitudes toward mask-wearing during COVID-19: Understanding the complexities of mask-ulinity (SAGE) Path analyses indicated that the relationship between conformity to masculine norms (CMN) and attitudes toward mask-wearing to protect from COVID-19 was mediated by perceived benefits, perceived barriers, confidence in the scientific community, and empathy toward vulnerable persons, and that political ideology moderated the indirect effects from CMN to men’s attitudes.
Toxic Mask-ulinity: The Link between Masculine Toughness and Affective Reactions to Mask Wearing in the COVID-19 Era (Cambridge Core) Utilizing an original survey, we test the correlation between masculinity and mask wearing. We find that identification with norms of masculinity has a significant influence on affective responses toward mask wearing.
