Introduction to the Web of Science Database

Connecting research across the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities from journals, books and conference proceedings, Clarivate's Web of Science is a powerful database for both subject and cited reference searching. BU's subscription coverage is from 1965 to presentOver 85 million records are indexed in Web of Science including 34,000 journals, more than 134,000 books and over 300,000 conferences. Additionally, there are 1.9 billion (1900 to present) cited references. Biomedical sciences, natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, arts & humanities are covered with the strongest coverage of natural sciences & engineering, computer science, materials sciences, patents, data sets. Web of Science is an index and you can easily link from the database to the BU Library Search to find full-text of BU-accessible content. 

Some strengths of the database include:

  • Cover to cover indexing for all of its sources - every paper in the journals, books and proceedings is included. 
  • Full cited reference indexing for all content.
  • Can sort search results according to how frequently the articles have been cited.
  • Ability to analyze search results graphically using the Analyze tool.
  • Consistently applied subject categorization across all items selected for coverage.
  • Records include author affiliation and funding sources.
