The map shows Kurdistan and the surrounding region, which includes parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. It is marked with the names of Kurdish tribes to record their known locations. It is used to accompany the General Staff, India publication entitled Kurdistan and the Kurds. Regions where the population is predominantly or partially Armenian are indicated. The collection focuses on cultural and urban images, mainly of Constantinople (Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, but other geographic areas, such as the Balkans, and other cities and towns within the empire such as Bursa and Smyrna (İzmir) are included, as are a few images from places.
Images of Turkey in the Prints & Photographs Division, Library of Congress
The Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division (P&P) has more than 8,500 images depicting Turkey. Most of these images show locations within the boundaries of the present day Republic of Turkey, although some show Syria and other regions that were part of the Ottoman Empire when the photographs were taken. Photographs make up the majority of the collection, although other formats including prints, posters, cartoons, book illustrations, and postcards are also available.
