There are several ways you can obtain books or articles that we do not own. These include:

WorldCat Discovery. WorldCat Discovery allows current BU faculty, staff, and students to borrow books directly from other Boston Library Consortium libraries. Turnaround time is approximately three working days. (How to use WorldCat Discovery)

Interlibrary Loan. Interlibrary Loan services allow current BU faculty, staff, and students to request books, articles, book chapters, and other materials that our ILL staff will obtain from other libraries. Books generally take 2-4 weeks to arrive; articles are generally delivered electronically within 1-2 days.

The Dialogic Nation of Cape Verde: Slavery, Language, and Ideology is an ethnographic study of language use and ideology in Cape Verde, from its early settlement as a center for slave trade, to the postcolonial present. The study is methodologically rich and innovative in that it weaves together historical, linguistic, and ethnographic data from different eras with sketches of contemporary life--a homicide trial, a scholarly meeting, a competition for a new national flag, a heterodox Catholic mass, an analysis of love letters, a priest's sermon, and a death in the neighborhood. In all these different contexts, Marcia Rego focuses on the role of Kriolu (the Cape Verdean Creole) and its relation to Portuguese--that is, on the way people live through speaking. The Dialogic Nation of Cape Verde shows how, through the dialogic give-and-take of the two languages, Cape Verdeans wrestle with deep-seated colonial hierarchies, invent and rehearse new traditions, and articulate their identity as a sovereign, creole nation.

Race, Culture and Portuguese Colonialism in Cabo Verde

This volume examines the exploitation of the faunal diversity during the Holocene in the Horn of Africa, especially in the arid plain of Gobaad in Djibouti and in the mountainous region of Wolayta in Ethiopia. For that purpose, the author has studied faunal collections (more than 70 000 remains and 34 species) from five archaeological sites occupied from the 5th millennium BC to the 1st millennium AD. Both these regions offer very different natural environments, in which the presence of specialized societies of hunter-gatherers is evident. By integrating the findings of this research with data from the neighbouring countries, and by comparing them with all archaeological data, it appears that the diffusion of farming came from acculturation more than migration.
