Step by Step Instructions

You can use the BU Libraries Search box to look for print and electronic resources available through the Boston University Libraries. These resources include print books and journals available in the library stacks, as well as e-books and full-text journal articles.

1. Conduct Your Search.

For example, if our research question is "How does incarceration impact mental health?" we would want to identify keywords and subjects to use when searching. To ensure we get strong results in our search, we want to focus on the most important words relevant to our research. In this example, we might first try in searching the keywords: incarceration and mental health to find results relevant to our research.

2. Filter Your Search

You can connect to my results from searching  incarceration mental health here. I then used the columns, or filters, to tell the results I only wanted journal articles that are peer reviewed, and updated the time frame to be 2015-2025. My results are here.

3. Open Your Result (article, book, etc.)

My first result looks like a great fit! So I am going to click on the title to open that resource:

4. Getting Your Citation

When looking at the information about that item, scroll down until you see the box that says "Send To" and then select "Citation"

5. Copy Your Citation

Then, select APA (7th edition). This is the full-text citation for your Reference List which comes at the end of the paper. From this, we can identify the parts needed for our in-text citation.
