Face-veiled Women in Contemporary IndonesiaAlthough face-veiling is new and unusual in Indonesia, an increasing number of women are choosing to wear the cadar, that is the full face-veil. This book, based on extensive original research, explores why Muslim women choose to wear the cadar and what the consequences are. It outlines how these women belong to two Islamist revivalist movements- the Salafi groups and the Tablighi Jama'at, shows how the practice of Islam in Indonesia continues to shift over time, and demonstrates that women are key actors in that process.

BU Today: CAS Class Explores Women in the Muslim WorldThe students in the Women in the Muslim World class learn to question the stereotypes of Muslim women, in the United States and in Muslim societies. Shahla Haeri, a CAS associate professor of anthropology, has taught the class since 2004.
Class by class, lecture by lecture, question asked by question answered, an education is built. This is one of a series of visits to one class, on one day, in search of those building blocks at BU.
