Structuring your poster

Title: Make your title information and easy to read. Whenever possible, avoid jargon

Background/Introduction Session: This should be brief but detailed enough for your audience to understand the purpose of your poster. Limit the introduction to 4-8 sentences, and whenever possible use images or diagrams to balance out the text.

Hypothesis/Question: Highlight your hypothesis or research question by putting it into its own section. Limit this to about one sentence. 

Results Section: Present your results in 4-8 short sections. Each section should have a different title. The results should be summarized in one or two sentence and include graphs or charts to liven up your text.

Summary/Conclusion: Briefly summarize the results of your findings. You may want to conclude with a sentence or two about whether or not your hypothesis was proved or disproved.

References/Acknowledgements: If you include references or acknowledgements, try limiting these to 3-5. You may want to consider using a smaller font for this section of the poster.

Design and Layout

Columns: Audiences generally have a natural inclination to read information in a poster in columns, so it is helpful to present your information this way.

Borders: To help your audience focus on one section at a time, it is helpful to divide up your content by using borders.

Font: Make your words easy to read by using sans serif fonts such as: Calibri, Century Gothic, Helvetica, Myriad Pro, Tahoma, or Verdana. If you want to emphasize text, bold it or italicize it; as underlining can be distracting to the eye.

Casing: titles tend to be easiest to read when written in sentence casing.

Empty Space: Make use of empty space between your sections of text, diagrams, or figures.

Background Colors: Cool colors such as green, brown, and blue are less distracting than warmer colors.

Alignment: Carefully align your boxes with equal space in between them.

Avoid: Extraneous information such as an institutional logo or decorative graphics.

Paper Type: Glossy paper type often looks more professional than matte paper.
