Ajami

AAL is a collaborative open access public repository of aggregated Ajami materials. This initiative between Boston University and the West African Research Center (WARC) is partly funded by the British Library’s Endangered Archives Programme.

This Boston University research project, Ajami Literacy and the Expansion of Literacy and Islam: The Case of West Africa, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, has digitized a unique selection of manuscripts in Ajami in four major West African languages (Hausa, Mandinka, Fula, and Wolof), transcribed and translated them into English and French, prepared commentary, and created related multimedia resources to be made widely available to the scholarly community and the general public.

A collection of bibliographies by David Westley, BU bibliographer for African Studies. Lists Ajami texts available in print at the library. Includes Ajami texts in the following languages: Hausa, Swahili, Kanuri, Jóola Foñi, Fula (Fulfulde, Pulaar), and Wolof.

The Niger Artisans Project consists of 12 candid conversations with artisans working in Niamey, Niger. The artisans featured here fall into a category more closely related to the corresponding Hausa term ma’aikatan hannu, or people who work with their hands. Each interview includes a transcription in Ajami.

This collection includes some Ajami material, including children's books in Hausa. While cataloging of this collection is a work in progress, a partial listing of books is available here.
